Novello Festival Press > Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Novello Festival Press?

A: NFP is the award-winning publishing project of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. We're the only library-funded literary publisher in the U.S.; proceeds from our books support the library.

Q: What kind of work do you publish? Must it be set in the South?

A: We publish works of literary fiction, literary non-fiction and poetry. Occasionally we publish works for children and young adults. Your work does not necessarily need to be set in the South. We do not publish genre fiction such as romance, sci-fi or westerns, nor do we publish self-help or reference books.

Q: Do I have to live in North Carolina?

A: Not necessarily. In most cases, we will accept submissions from any writer who lives in NC or SC.

Q: How can I submit my work to NFP?

A: We accept submissions only during specific times. You can find details in our Calls for Submission, which explain what kind of work we want, the deadline, word count, subject matter and any residency requirement.

Q: How can I find out about Calls for Submission?

A: They are all publicized through our website. We also notify regional writers' advocacy organizations such as the NC Writers' Network; many distribute our information through their newsletters.

Q: Is there a current Call for Submissions?

A: Yes, we are accepting book-length works for the 2009 Novello Literary Award.

Q: Do I need an agent?

A: No. While many large publishers require you have an agent before they consider your work, we don't accept agent submissions.

Q: Do you pay authors?

A: Yes! NFP pays book authors royalties that are comparable with other trade book publishers. In rare instances, we may ask writers to lend us short pieces of their work without payment, such as for projects that promote or raise funds for the library.

Q: Can you help me finish my work in progress?

A: No. We are unable to provide editorial help for works in progress. You should contact an organization such as the N.C. Writers' Network or the Writers' Workshop to find classes or editorial help.

Q: If I pay for the printing and production, will Novello Festival Press publish my book?

A: No. We do not accept projects that are subsidized by individuals or corporations.

Q: When will you announce the winner of the 2009 Novello Literary Award?

A: The award winner will be announced at Novello Press Night on October, 2009, during the Novello Festival of Reading. The event is free and open to the public. For more information on this event and the festival, visit www.novellofestival.net.

Q: If you publish my book, where will it be available?

A: NFP books are available at bookstores nationwide, through online retailers, at PLCMC branches and through the library's online gift shop.

Q: If you publish my work, who holds the copyright?

A: You do. NFP authors hold the copyright to their works; NFP books are deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office and the Library of Congress.

Q: Can you please describe the process for judging the Novello Literary Award?

A: After the deadline for manuscripts is reached, the staff of Novello Festival Press distributes manuscripts to our first readers. These readers include librarians, college professors, literary agents, writers, and editors. None of the judges has a manuscript in the competition, nor does the staff or board of Novello Festival Press. Once the first round of readings conclude, the evaluations are reviewed by NFP staff and our final review panel, which is comprised of the NFP staff, board, and guest reviewers. The most highly-rated manuscripts are read and reviewed. The winner and the finalists are chosen from that group. The winner of the Novello Literary Award, upon acceptance of the award, enters into a contractual and working relationship with the press, which leads to publication of the winning book.
